Learning Center

The Learning Center provides tailored academic support services for all learners in a safe, professional, and nurturing environment that emphasizes achievement in a diverse community.

With locations on both campuses, Room 1406 (Des Plaines) and Room A207 (Skokie), the Learning Center offers three main types of support for academic success: tutoring, study strategies and techniques, and co-curricular programs that enhance classroom learning.

1 in 5 Students will work with the Learning Center while at Oakton.

Learning Center Services

Tutors provide academic support across a wide range of subject areas, including writing, mathematics, STEM disciplines, the arts, languages, and more. Services are available both in person and online at no additional cost to Oakton students.

Students who need additional academic support can request additional weekly tutoring. Log into your myOakton account to view the current tutoring schedule.

Learning Support Coordinators can help with time management, study skills, effective note-taking, and reading skills.

The Learning Center and TRIO Student Support Services come together in the fall and spring semesters to bring students the Academic Success and Beyond Series (AS&B) of free workshops.

The workshops are open to all Oakton College students. Topics include being successful in a remote environment, study skills, time management and self-care. Participants also learn about other free support services.

  • Attend class/lab and come ready to learn and review the material.
  • Plan ahead and meet with a tutor before assignments or exams are due.
  • Attempt your work ahead of time and bring questions to discuss.

  • Students are responsible for understanding their instructor’s assignment guidelines and grading expectations.
  • Tutors focus on helping you strengthen your writing overall, rather than correcting every sentence or providing proofreading or assignment completion.
